My First Punjabi Sounds · Lesson 2

My Name Is…

A warm, spoken Punjabi practice for children ages 5–12. In 10–12 minutes, your child can share their name and understand two ways of asking someone’s name.

Listen first, then practice together. There is no need to get every word perfect today.

1 · Listen

Listen first. Hear how Punjabi speakers ask and share a name.

For parents: Read each line slowly once, then naturally once. Let your child listen first—there is no need to repeat right away.

Native pronunciation coming soon.

2 · Say

Share your name.

Try this

Put your own name in the blank when you say the whole sentence.

Familiar: use with children or friends.

Polite/respectful: use when speaking politely.

Try together: A parent asks either question. The child answers with their own name in ਮੇਰਾ ਨਾਮ ___ ਹੈ।

I can say my name in Punjabi.

3 · See / Read

See the whole sentence, then its parts.

My | name | ___ | is.

For parents: Point to each Punjabi word while reading the whole line.

4 · Trace / Write

Make your name badge.

Younger learners

Make an English name badge and trace or copy the Punjabi sentence frame with adult help.

Older learners

once, using the blank for your own name.

5 · Quick Game

Name Ball

Pretend to pass an imaginary ball and ask one of the two Punjabi questions. Your child catches it and responds: ਮੇਰਾ ਨਾਮ ___ ਹੈ।

Play three rounds. Siblings can take turns. The goal is confident speaking, not speed.

6 · 2-minute family practice

Use it once in everyday life.

At breakfast, in the car, or at bedtime, a parent asks the child one question once and the child answers once. Then the child asks the parent ਤੁਹਾਡਾ ਨਾਮ ਕੀ ਹੈ? and the parent answers ਮੇਰਾ ਨਾਮ ___ ਹੈ।

Parent note: Praise effort and clarity; if the child starts in English, model Punjabi once and invite another try—do not turn it into a correction drill.

You did it

A gentle end-of-lesson check.

  • Can your child answer either name question with ਮੇਰਾ ਨਾਮ ___ ਹੈ।?
  • Can they recognize that the sentence is about their name?
